This was originally primarily a medical journal but under the influence of Fowler & Wells, which began publishing the journal in 1846 with volume 3, it came to include “Dietetics, Exercise, Clothing, Amusements, and those Laws which govern Life and Health,” together with the ideas on universal reform that characterized the Fowlers. Orson Fowler retired to Boston in 1863, and Trall took over the publication at the beginning of the same year, renaming the journal Herald of Health but continuing the volume numbering of the original. T. L. Nichols and Mary Gove Nichols feature prominently in its first 20 volumes. University of Michigan; Harvard University; University of Chicago.
