1839--1892? Annual
New York, NY. Publisher: L.N. Fowler; O.S. and L.N. Fowler; Fowler & Wells; Samuel R. Wells.
1/1, 1839.

This was the annual companion to Fowler & Wells' American Phrenological Journal, issued by a variety of publishers. It appeared under one name or another, with the names occasionally overlapping each other, at least until the mid-1890s: Phrenological Journal (1839-1843); Phrenological Almanac and Physiological Guide (1844-1845?); Phrenological and Physiological Almanac (1848-?); Illustrated Phrenological Almanac (1850-1863?) Illustrated Annual of Phrenology and Physiognomy (1863-1873?); Phrenological Annual and Register (1892). The additions to the titles (physiology, physiognomy) reflect changing understandings of phrenology and the publisher's efforts to expand interest in the journal. As with all phrenological publications, this is heavily illustrated, sometimes very creatively, and boasts that it contains "the portraits and phrenological developments of many eminent individuals, with a definition of the phrenological organs." The journal offered charts of the moon's phases and the dates of the equinoxes and solstices, and the like, but added basic introductory information on the new science of phrenology ("Phrenology means the philosophy of the mind"), explanations of the omnipresent "symbolical head," approbation of it by prominent men and women, and short histories of the development of the science and the spread of its doctrines. Years that had seen a spectacular murder or execution ("Palmer, the English Poisoner," and others) featured a phrenological analysis of the culprit, while casts of the skulls of these "pirates, robbers, murderers, and thieves," could be observed, for a fee, at Fowler & Wells' Cabinet on Nassau Street in Manhattan. On Fowler & Wells and their interests, see the notes under American Phrenological Journal and Miscellany, Water-Cure Journal, Spirit of the Age. NYPL; Harvard University.
