Writers, Speakers, and Workers,

In the Different Fields of Human Progress.

In revising the list of names of Friends of Progress in our last ANNUAL for republication, we experienced to an increased degree the difficulty and embarrassment we have heretofore felt. To attempt to register the names of all, or any considerable portion of those who are entitled to be regarded as active and efficient workers for Human Progress, is each year becoming more and more difficult. Happily this conviction, though it may serve to render the meager columns of a Progressive Register superfluous, will cause no lasting disquiet to any reader. If we may not gather and preserve the names of all who “labor and wait” for the “good time coming,” we can at least preserve from temporary forgetfulness the names of the few pioneers to whose advance movements the world is so largely indebted for the growing popularity of many branches of human reform.

At a time when the nation’s battle hosts are so truly—with some melancholy exceptions in cases of individual inhumanity and outrage—a grand Army of Liberation to the enslaved millions—enslaved, yet, thank heaven, since January 1, 1863, by high authority declared free—when such an Army has joined itself to the progressive ranks, how wide the columns and extended the pages needed to comprehend them all.

Nor need we stop here in our catalogue. The exigencies of the times have awakened to new activity the latent energies and vital principles of the human spirit in wide fields of charity, enlightenment, civilization, and progress. The sanitary movements, the labors of women in hospitals and at home, in provision for sick and wounded soldiers, for destitute families, orphaned children, and benighted freedmen, all serve to brighten the present page of our nation’s history, and to mark distinctly the grand progressive march of humanity.

The following lists, be it remembered then, are presented rather to keep fresh in the memories of our many readers the names of those who have been laborers in the vanguard, than to include the many who are now battling for freedom or laboring in more peaceful fields for the good, the beautiful, the progressive, and the true.
