This was begun by [Joseph Paul] Oswald Wirth (1860-1943), a Swiss artist, traditionalist and occultist and the onetime secretary of Stanislas de Guaita. He is best known for his Major Arcana Tarot deck (inspired by de Guaita and published first in Papus's volume on Tarot) and for the praise Rene Guenon bestowed on him for his studies on Masonic symbolism and its role in spiritual awakening. Wirth had helped Guenon obtain admittance in 1912 to a "regular" Masonic lodge (Loge Thebah) under the Grand Lodge of France of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, though the lodge's regularity might be looked askance at by Anglo-Saxon Masons. Its master, Pierre Deuillin, was the brother-in-law of Papus (Gerard Encausse) and Deuillin was very active with F.-Ch. Barlet in Max Theon's Mouvement Cosmique. Wirth contributed to the journal a vast number of articles on symbolism and on the initiatic basis of Freemasonry, although Guenon, who contributed to the journal in January 1913 (a conference he had given in Loge Thebah) and in the 1930s, would ultimately disagree with Wirth on that issue.
