The journal states that 8 issues were published in its first year, and the second year was started with vol. 2, no. 1, in January 1882. The society was started in the Empire of Brazil on October 3, 1879, with the stated purpose of "the active and open promotion of spiritism." The journal was to "publish free of charge scientific and philosophical works, and works of general interest, that were submitted, including works contrary to spiritism." The journal was largely devoted to the works of Allan Kardec ("Character of Spirit Revelation") and to setting out the rules for individual groups and the organization of seances.
