This was the second Spanish spiritualist journal (after El Criterio Espiritista). In January 1876 the journal's name was changed to Revista de Estudios Psicologicos. Colavida (1819-1888) was an anticlerical freethinker and also the translator of Allan Kardec's works. His portrait (over the title: "Don Fernandez Colarida") appeared on the cover of the Medium and Daybreak, December 24, 1874. The Revista Espiritista as its name indicates was staunchly "spiritist" in orientation and published a biography of Kardec in its first issue. The journal carried the usual spiritist discourses on charity, avarice, virtue, education, etc., and reports of seances with Spanish mediums (usually identified only by their initials), and in the early days devoted space to magnetism as well. After 1876, with the name change to Revista de Estudios Psicologicos, the journal became more open to the panoply of "estudios psicologicos" (hypnotism, magnetism, clairvoyance, phenomena, etc.).
On the journal, see Oscar M. Garcia Rodriguez, Historia del Periodismo Espiritista en Espana; De Kardec Hasta la Guerra Civil Espanola (2006), online at http://www.ameporto.org/pt/entrevistas/oscar.pdf, and "Origenes del Periodismo Espirita en Espana," online at http://www.espiritismo.cc. Florentino Barerra, El Auto de Fe de Barcelona, 3d ed. (Buenos Aires: Ediciones Vida Infinita, 2008), 81-82 gives a brief biography of and picture of Colavida.
