Afonso Angeli Torteroli (1849-1928) was a combative spiritualist, defending the revelation from the mysticism of J.B. Roustaing and advocating a "scientific" view of the doctrine. He was one of the founders of the Sociedade Academica in 1879 that was formed to defend spiritualism in the public press and then in this journal and its two successors, Renovador and Reformador. The journal carried extensive and thoughtful reviews of the spiritualist press in Europe and Brazil, and carried notably a letter received by one of its "intuitive mediums" from A. Comte on "Spiritualism and Positivism." In July 1882, the society, faced with political opposition, closed this journal and started the short-lived O Renovador, only to replace that in turn in 1883 with O Reformador. Noted in Mind and Matter 3/45 (October 1881): 3, and Reformirende Blatter, February 1883.
