Le Révélateur was an early French journal of animal magnetism, its holdings dating from the late 1830s. Its pages are given over to the practice and reporting of magnetic treatment: the magnetiser's passes, the induction of magnetic sleep, the lucidity and clairvoyance of the somnambulist, and dated case records of cures, crises and convulsions observed in the séance de magnétisme. Patients are shown refusing all remedy save the magnetism itself, including magnetised water. Although 'séances' and 'esprits' recur, they belong to the mesmeric rather than the mediumistic register, placing the paper at the historical boundary from which French spiritism would later emerge. It is, at core, a document of Mesmer's therapeutic magnetism in its mid-nineteenth-century French form.
