Pratt (1811-1881) was an original member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Latter Day Saints, and a mathematician. The almanac was a standard compilation of notably dates for the western, central and eastern United States, with dates for eclipses, moon phases, anniversaries of the deaths of notable persons, combined with Orson's discussions of the outrages in Missouri perpetrated on the Mormons, regular paragraphs on "The Doctrine of Christ," arguments over the "false doctrines of the nineteenth century," and the like.
