This is the work of the Swedenborg Scientific Association, founded in 1898 to make known Swedenborg's scientific and philosophical works in a scholarly way, including critical commentary, philosophical studies, and publication of foreign-language and archival materials by and about Swedenborg. Whitehead was instrumental in the early years of the association and was a principal translator of the Standard Edition of the works of Swedenborg. The journal carried lengthy material by Swedenborg, reports of the association's meetings, notes on the elements of Swedenborg's publications, and academic debate over controversial points of Swedenborg's career and publications, notably Marsha Keith Schuchard's revolutionary re-positioning of Swedenborg in the "mystical underworld" of the kabbalistic, hermetic and Moravian sexual movements of his time, the revelation of his roles in contemporary Jacobite and Masonic culture, and the reinterpretation of "Conjugial Love" to include the role of sex in achieving visionary experiences.
