Walters (1841-1921) was a Canadian-born health reformer and the proprietor of "Drs. Walter's Mountain Home" (later ‘Walter's Park Sanitarium") near Reading, Pennsylvania. After years of being an invalid, he determined to find the laws of health and obtained degrees from Russell Trall's Hygieo-Therapeutic College of New York and the Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia and set off to correct the errors of modern medicine and to cure mankind by exercise, diet, fresh air, homeopathic pharmacology, and fasting (the "Hunger Cure"). He built his fantastic sanitarium on 500 acres and, for $8.00-$12.00 a week room and board, offered thousands of supplicants the Nutritive and Diet Cure, the Water (wet sheet) Cure, the Movement Cure, together with sun bathing,, fasting and a dose of electricity. Children were offered a Kindergarten-School for children for $5.00 a week to inculcate "intelligence, morality and health." This journal proclaimed that it was "devoted to the discussion of hygienic and medical subjects, and particularly to the elaboration and advocacy of A New Philosophy of Disease, and its Treatment. . . . A practice of many years has taught us that the prevailing methods of depleting or reducing sick people either by drugs, water or diet, in order to restore them to health, is not in accordance with the principles of a True Healing Art, and hence this Journal may be said to be the exponent of a system which hopes to succeed only by BUILDING UP PROCESSES. Invigoration, not by stimulants, tonics, or nervous excitements of any kind, but alone by nutrition, the only source of strength, vigor or life, comprehends the idea."
