Summary: |
From Pat Deveney's database:
Journal du Magnetisme. Baron Jules Denis Du Potet (or Dupotet) de Sennevoy (1796-1881) founded the journal and edited the first series (until 1861). The journal was revived in 1878 by by Hector Durville as Revue Magnetique and the name changed the next year to the original, and also continued as La Chaine Magnetique by Dupotet himself. Dupotet was extraordinarily important in the development of occultism in the nineteenth century both through this journal and through his La Magie Devoilee, ou Principes de Science Occulte (1852) which forcefully identified the principles active in mesmerism with those employed in traditional magic. The journal was riven in its later years by the fight between those who insisted on the magnetic "fluid" as the cause of the then-current phenomena, and those who, at least, wanted to include the spirits of the dead as movers.
