This was the final spiritualist journal published by Torres Solanot y Casas (1840-1902) and reflects his Kardecist anti-clericalism and socialism and his proclaimed scientific approach to spiritualism--an approach tempered with credulity. Mendez Bejarano wrote of him: "if he had a fault it was bonhomie and excessive credulity," and his credulousness is demonstrated by his books on the Medium of the Flowers and the Davenport Brothers. The journal's stated mission was "to propagate the redeeming doctrines, the doctrines of peace, brotherhood, charity, of universal solidarity that spiritualism proclaims . . . ." The response of the Catholic Church to its appearance was prompt and the journal's third issue noted that the Bishop of Huesca had excommunicated Torres Solanot and forbidden the reading of the journal. The journal had contributions by Torres Solanot, Amalia Domingo Soler, Quintin Lopez, Enrique Oltra, Vicente Aguirre, Salvador Marco, Esteban Chavala, Severo Lasala, Sixto Huerta, Constantina Olivera, Mariano Perez, Felix Ferrer, Bernabe Morera y Lorenzo Fuyola, and others, and carried serial expositions of the "Doctrine Espiritista," "Death According to Spiritualism," "The State of Education," "Social Evolution" (by M. Navarro y Murillo), "The Jesuits," and similar topics, reports of seances ("Communicaciones de los Espiritus"), together with news of events affecting spiritualism in Spain and dealing with notable spiritualists abroad ("Jesse Shepar[d] en Paris," "Los Descubrimientos de un Medium"--Abraham James). The journal's demise was precipitated by the epidemic of cholera raging in Spain at the time. It was suspended from August to October 1885, and then closed finally at the end of December. On the journal generally, see Mario Mendez Bejarano, Historia de Filosofia en Espana hasta el Siglo XX (1927), section xiv El Espiritism, online at http://filosofia.org/aut/mmb/hfe1714.htm.
