Shaw (1841-1926), like B.F. Austin and others, was an expelled Methodist who found his way into freethought, reform, a vague deism, and liberalism (he was the founding president of the Texas Liberal Association). He founded this journal the year after was expelled from the ministry and used the first issue to describe the moral and legal iniquities of his expulsion. He was not a spiritualist but in the reform milieu in which he moved after leaving Methodism he could scarcely ignore it, and gave it some skeptical mention and allowed spiritualists to make their case in its pages. Baylor University.
