Gem of Science, The. The journal was "devoted to Phrenology, Physiology, Magnetism, and Woman, including a miscellaneous department." It also regularly carried articles on temperance and on clairvoyance. Ezra H. Sanford (1820-1900) was a lawyer who was noted in the Ann Arbor newspapers as a "somewhat eccentric specimen." He spent time in his youth in a Fourierist colony at Alphadelphia, Michigan, and ended up as a judge in Kansas.
