("And while they can pay for the Gem in one day by their ordinary business, by a bushel or two of wheat, or by a part of the avails of a common plea, an ordinary sermon, or a third of a day's legislating, we shall serve them a year, in return.")

The journal was "devoted to Phrenology, Physiology, Magnetism, and Woman, including a miscellaneous department." It also regularly carried articles on temperance and on clairvoyance. Ezra H. Sanford (1820-1900) was a lawyer who was noted in the Ann Arbor newspapers as a "somewhat eccentric specimen." He spent time in his youth in a Fourierist colony at Alphadelphia, Michigan, and ended up as a judge in Kansas.
