Divine Life, The. This was the organ for the teachings of Swami Sivananda Saraswati (1887-1963) and the Divine Live Society he founded in 1936, offering "Valuable Spiritual Instructions on Karma, Bhakti, Yoga, Vedant and Philosophy." He was a proponent of Vedanta and what he called the "Synthesis of Yoga," a syncretistic version of yoga easily adopted by lay people and Westerners, particularly. He started his ashram, Ananda Kutir (Abode of Bliss) in Rishikesh in 1934 to teach his disciples Universal Brotherhood and the value of selfless service. Stanford; Emory University
