The Christian Science Journal, founded by Mary Baker Eddy at Boston in 1883, is the official organ of the Church of Christ, Scientist and the doctrinal centre of the movement. Its teaching is an absolute idealism: God is infinite Spirit and All-in-All, reality is wholly spiritual, matter and its diseases belong to what Eddy called mortal mind, and healing follows from correct spiritual understanding rather than from medicine. The Journal carries that teaching in three registers at once — theological exposition arguing from Scripture and from the nature of matter, practical instruction and testimony from the church's healing practice, and the institutional business of the Mother Church and its branches, including the directory of authorised practitioners that made the Journal the movement's professional register.
