Summary |
From Pat Deveney's database:
Bibliotheque du Magnetisme Animal. The journal seems to have been issued in quarterly numbered tomes of about 290 pages, with issue numbers run sequentially within the volume but not separated. This was the organ of the Societe du Magnetisme begun by Armand Chastenet, Marquis de Puysegur in 1815 to rescue Magnetism from the darkness and disinterest that had overwhelmed it in the 35 years since Mesmerism's heyday. The journal attempted to provide an overview of "the state of magnetism" across Europe and a review of current books, and contained case studies of cures and treatments, notes of somnambules' marvelous accomplishments, and historical and theoretical articles on magnetism. Notable among the last is an article by Joseph Philippe François Deleuze (1753-1835), the vice-president of the Societe du Magnetisme, on "Sur les faits qui semblent prouver une communication des somnambules avec les e ĂȘtres spirituels, et sur les conse equences qu'on peut tirer de ces faits," which reasons that the visions and experience of somnambules and the beings contacted by them while out of their bodies proved the immortality of the human soul and provided a solid foundation for ethics and morality.
