Bible Review was the journal of Hiram Erastus Butler's Esoteric Fraternity at Applegate, California, published in the first years of the twentieth century as the successor to the same body's earlier magazine The Esoteric. Despite the scriptural title it is not devotional commentary but a complete esoteric system, and the word esoteric saturates its pages as the Fraternity's name for its own teaching. Two doctrines organise it. The first is Butler's Solar Biology, an astrology that assigns each person to a sign by the month of birth and reads character and function from it rather than casting horoscopes. The second, and the Fraternity's defining discipline, is regeneration: sexual continence understood as the retention and transmutation of a generative force by which the soul reclaims what the animal life squanders. Around these run reincarnation, prophetic expectation of the second coming, visionary accounts of passing through the veil between the worlds, and a communal ideal in which property is held in common — a principle the Fraternity practised as well as taught.
