The Archiv für den thierischen Magnetismus, published at Jena in 1804, is one of the earliest German periodicals of animal magnetism, from the years when the mesmeric movement was establishing itself in the German states as a subject of medical rather than merely fashionable attention. Its two surviving numbers are given over to magnetic somnambulism and to the magnetizers who practised it, and the sampled text is clinical case narrative rather than doctrine. One passage records a patient's condition in the observational manner of the period: at a certain sound and the shock that comes with it she hurries to cover her face with her hands; the abdomen is noticeably distended, the lower limbs very cold and without sensation or movement, and the whole body appears to have gained in volume and elasticity. Another describes a young woman in continuous convulsions and the dismay of a father who, told in the morning that she had grown calmer, approached her — and had barely met her eyes before the fit began again.
