Eschenmayer (1768-1852) was the chief mover behind this journal, assisted by Kieser (1779-1862), Nasse (1778-1851), and von Esenbeck (1776-1858). Kieser went on to publish Sphinx, this journal's successor. On von Esenbeck, who arranged the translation of A.J. Davis's works into German, see the note under Bibliothek des Spiritualismus fur Deutschland. Eschenmayer was professor of philosophy and medicine at Tubingen, a friend of Justinus Kerner, and the first of the prominent Romantic parapsychologists. This group of "pneumatologists" around the Archiv fur thierischen Magnetismus was fascinated with Schelling's philosophy and the "Night Side of Nature"--the Romantic shadow of the Enlightenment. On the pneumatologists, see C. Kiesewetter, Geschichte des neueren Occultismus (1891), 326-414. The journal carried theoretical discussions of magnetism and its relationship with human magnetism and of clairvoyance, dreams, prophecies, the human will, rhabdomancy, second sight, dowsing, pendulums, varieties of "baguets" and their construction, magnetic prophetic dreams, amulettes, etc., case studies by physicians and others on healing, replies to controversies and defenses of magnetism, and notices of new literature on the subject.
